SINGAPORE AND PHILIPPINES: TWO EMERGING MARKETS OF VN PANGASIUS

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In 2018, Vietnam pangasius exports to ASEAN achieved good results. By the end of November 2018, the total export value to this market reached 183.5 million USD, up 43.7% over the same period last year.
Particularly, the 3 largest export markets in the bloc are Thailand, Singapore and Philippines with the rise in value of 48.1%; 25.1% and 39.3% respectively compared to the same period in 2017.
In the first 11 months of 2018, Pangasius export value to Thailand market reached 67.5 million USD. This is the largest export market of Vietnamese pangasius in ASEAN, accounting for 36.8% of total export to the region. According to ITC statistics, in the first 10 months of 2018, Vietnam is Thailand's largest market of white meat fish, with the main product of frozen pangasius fillet (HS code 030462) with the average imports ranging from US$4.4 to 6.9 million/month in terms of value; and 2.000 to 3.750 MT/month in terms of valume. In addition to Vietnamese pangasius products, Thailand also imported some other white meat fish products such as Alaska fish meat (HS code 030494) from the US and Alaska pollock fish (HS code  030367) from Russia. Until this time, frozen pangasius imports from Thailand is still quite stable with positive demand.
In addition to Thailand, in 2018, pangasius exports to Singapore and Philippines markets also achieved high growth with the value of US$42.3 million and US$37.4 million respectively. According to some pangasius enterprises, the import demand of these two markets increased sharply. In the first 9 months of 2018, Singapore imported pangasius mainly from Vietnam, in addition, the country also imported pangasius from China and Malaysia. In addition to frozen pangasius fillet, Singapore also imports frozen Alaska pollock fish products (HS code 030475) from China and frozen tilapia (HS code 030461) from Indonesia. In 2018, the demand for importing pangasius from Singapore and the Philippines is stable and growing at double digits. These are positive signs for Vietnamese pangasius in ASEAN.
